Siegfried Klotz
Klotz’s studio, his “work den” at the Academy of Fine Arts on Brühl’s Terrace in Dresden, was a place of intense creativity. The painting table resembled an installation. Piles of leftover paint, brushes, paint tubes, and rags were scattered everywhere. It was in the studio that his self-determination as a painter and as a person took shape. Here, over the course of nearly forty years, his unmistakable body of work emerged: portraits, nudes, cityscapes - vibrant, untamed and full of life.

Applying paint thickly with brush and palette knife, Siegfried Klotz constantly sought a balance between a motif-oriented realism and a form-dissolving, painterly expressionism. In doing so, he developed his portraiture into a true mastery. For his cityscapes, mostly created in the immediate vicinity of his studio on the Brühlsche Terrasse, he liked to choose an elevated vantage point, often the roof of the Academy. As the “Phantasus of Dresden,” Siegfried Klotz created magnificent panoramas in which he captured the “myth of Dresden” on canvas with dynamic brushstrokes.
