The landscape seems to offer Anne Kern's painting everything. It is her subject, her fascination, her field of experimentation and her metaphor all in one. Man-made broken sandstone is her subject matter, the visually stunning nature of Saxon Switzerland her backdrop. Quarries, bizarre rock formations reflected in crystal-clear water, occasional traces of human life, an abandoned boat, a hut. The brushstrokes are broad, large linear strokes organise and provide adequate support in the form of breaks, crevices and cracks. The colour palette does without colouristic sensations. Blue, turquoise and grey, as well as green, brown and ochre, are finely tuned and contrasted, modulated between light and dark.

Anne Kern. Essenzen, Katalog der Ausstellung, Dresden: Galerie Himmel 2019, S. 7

Anne Kern does not find the image in her self-encounter through nature and colour when painting in the landscape. In the spirit of one of the greats of painting, Paul Klee, she confirms his statement: »Art does not show the visible, but makes visible«. Her multiple transformations of rocks and water in light and colour on the canvas are the finite prerequisites for infinite approximations. In her painting, she opens up the spirit-filled depths of creation, revealing and unlocking its living mystery.

Light, movement, change, growth and decay are the origins of nature, which I try to explore through my work.
