We are dedicating this years summer exhibition to the memory of the Dresden sculptor, painter and graphic artist Hermann Naumann, who passed away last autumn, who left a distinctive mark on the East German art scene with his sensuous, colourful works, his imaginative flair, his technical mastery and his almost manic creative drive.

Hermann Naumann

Hermann Naumann is one of the last representatives of a generation with a deep attachment to classical modernism and its protagonists. At heart, he was one of them. And so his paintings, characterised by bright colours and expressive forms, always have echoes of the Brücke, the Blaue Reiter and Russian Suprematism.

Introduction

Hermann Naumann (1930–2025) built up an extensive and magnificent œuvre over no less than seven decades. His universal talent, rare of its kind, combined with a seemingly boundless creative passion and power, gave rise to a life’s work whose diversity is truly astonishing. Hermann Naumann continually developed new and uniquely personal forms of expression across various art genres, employing countless techniques that he mastered and pushed to their absolute limits.

The spectrum of his visual art ranged from the representational, figurative and naturalistic to the abstract, constructive and geometric, and this held true at all times and across all genres – in the 1960s just as much as in the years after 2000, and no less so in sculpture than in painting and printmaking. Stylistically, his art meandered between representational Expressiveness, Suprematism, lyrical Surrealism and Constructivism. And yet he managed, with almost childlike ease, to remain recognisable in all these expressions.

So soon after his death, we cannot truly take stock of this œuvre as a whole, either in terms of its quantity or its quality. What we can already discern today is a wealth of inner imagery, a love of literature that repeatedly inspires congenial reinterpretations, a veritable obsession with the technical mastery and command of artistic techniques, an unmistakable delight in vibrant colours and musically composed colour harmonies, a tireless pursuit of beauty, a joy in experimentation that persisted into old age and seemed almost boyish, and, alongside this and not least, an obsessive, voyeuristic eroticism.

This summer, alongside the commemorative exhibition (22 August – 26 September 2026) at the Artists' House Hofmannsches Gut in Ditterbach-Duerrroehrsdorf, his final home and place of work, we are paying tribute to a great and dazzling artist and his work.
