Introduction

With the exhibition »Tanja Pohl – Memento«, GALERIE HIMMEL is showing the latest paintings, unique prints and sculptures by the multi-award-winning graduate of the Dresden Art Academy and student of Elke Hopfe, which revolve around the themes of man and machine, nature and society. Tanja Pohl's pictures tell of transformation, cultivation and destruction, use and decay. Industrial wasteland on a large scale and still life on a small scale are fitting metaphors for fundamental questions of existence. The »aesthetics of decay« has a long tradition. It was inspired by the ruins of ancient Rome. Since the Renaissance, ruins have been a topos of the locus aemonus, a symbol reminding us of the transience of all earthly things, a memento mori, a place of melancholic self-reflection. Above all, however, they are a symbol of the ongoing metamorphosis of the cyclical processes of rise and fall, of leaving an old era behind and embarking on a new one. We live in an era of great contrasts. A society driven by economic success and the desire for distraction is contrasted by the destitute, the failed and the weak. The benefits and dangers of technological development and the effects of economisation on our working and living environments are omnipresent. Added to this are wars, terrorism, natural disasters, famines, environmental destruction and climate change. With subtle allegories for human hubris, Tanja Pohl uses her lost places, still lifes and heads to examine the fragility of life, evoking fascination, irritation and, at times, oppressive unease. Tanja Pohl is a master of experimentation and variation, especially in classical printmaking. Her print works thrive on a movement, even musicality, that springs from her intoxicating work. Plates are milled, rotated 90 or 180 degrees, motifs modified, printing techniques and colours tested. The prints are reworked with ink, charcoal, pastels, oil or acrylic paint, often forming collages. Tanja Pohl's variations explore the possibilities of image composition and motif. Her work is an experimental and radical process that resembles an adventure. Each completed work reveals a unique result.
