and cheerful Eros

On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Max Schwimmer's death, we follow the trail of Eros, especially the cheerful Eros in Schwimmer's work. The Leipzig painter and draughtsman preferred motifs from lighter genres, alongside landscapes and still lifes, repeatedly returning to the theme of love. The exhibition shows over ninety drawings, watercolours, gouaches and paintings from all phases of the artist's career.

Max Schwimmer

As a painter and illustrator, Max Schwimmer reveals a unique erotic sensualism, whose foremost means of expression are an explicit colourism and the subtle elegance of his drawing style. After late expressionistic beginnings, he developed his painting in the 1920s under the influence of the Fauvism of Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, mediated by his teacher Hans Purrmann, into bright, joyful tonal colours. As a draughtsman, he remained devoted to the German Impressionist Max Slevogt throughout his life, even if the strong experience of Max Beckmann's painting almost turned him away after 1945 and led to metaphorical compression.

Introduction

Today, Max Schwimmer is best known as an artist and illustrator of countless lavishly illustrated editions of world literature. Anyone interested in literature has held a book in their hands adorned with Schwimmer's lively drawings. But Max Schwimmer was not purely an illustrator. During his youth, the Leipzig painter and draughtsman developed his own unique style, based on Impressionism, which was deeply kindred to his soul. A colour palette characterised by a loose airiness, heightened elegance and lively luminosity. Time and again, Schwimmer's critics have been quick to highlight the quality of his painting. The prominent art critic of German Impressionism, Karl Scheffler, recognised in this an unspoilt naivety, which essentially sought the splendour, magic and imagination of colour. He encouraged Schwimmer in 1944: »You are increasingly developing towards pure colourism, with an instinctive confidence that is your own domain. In this respect, you go far beyond Slevogt.« The art critic Wolfgang Balzer, later director of the Dresden State Art Collections, saw Schwimmer as early as 1922 as engaged in a cheerful play with colours, toning and distributing dots of colour with delightful ease, as if »making music with colours«. Schwimmer's painting underwent a substantial improvement through travels that took him to Italy and France. He spent the summer of 1924 with Hans Purrmann on Ischia, an island in the Gulf of Naples. He literally soaked up the southern Italian flair. Purrmann, a pupil of Matisse and the most French of all German painters at the time, became his only and eternally beloved teacher. Through him, the still unsuccessful painter was introduced to the school of French Impressionism. This development was confirmed and enriched by two trips to France, which took Schwimmer to Paris and then to the Midi for several weeks in 1926 and 1929 respectively. Under the influence of Mediterranean light and his encounter with Pierre Bonnard, his colour palette underwent a final brightening, while Jules Pascin inspired his turn towards amorous themes. The most important corrective for him was artistic competition in the present and in history. Schwimmer was particularly inspired by the French Impressionists. He measured his skill and his painterly agenda against Matisse, Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet and Cézanne, Renoir, van Gogh and Gauguin. In addition, he admired a wide variety of artists, starting with Rembrandt, whose drawing skills he valued beyond measure. The German Impressionists meant a great deal to him, above all the great Liebermann, but also Corinth, Slevogt, and not least the realist Menzel. Added to this were outsiders such as Munch, and later above all Beckmann. But among all these influential artists, the Leipzig native never lost his characteristic visual language, whose sensual and lively tone, cheerful and airy, is so unique.
