Introduction

We wanted to celebrate the 85th birthday of Herta Günther, the great Dresden painter, this May. Now the celebration has turned into a memorial exhibition in which we are showing paintings, watercolours, pastels and colour etchings from forty years of the artist's creative work. For over six decades, Herta Günther, who studied at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts under Hans Theo Richter and Max Schwimmer and had been working as a freelance artist since 1957, remained true to her artistic programme. Herta Günther loved beauty and elegance, but also preserved the bizarre and sometimes desolate in her paintings, always knowing how to tell a story as aptly as charmingly. She was a quiet and precise observer. She found her true calling as a flâneuse, a flâneuse in Elbflorenz. Her paintings describe bygone times and a metropolitan milieu that unfolded in Dresden's cafés and bars with an almost wistful tone. The places she painted, the pubs, the landscapes of the Elbe and the city, are often shrouded in a veil of sluggishness, as if time had almost stood still. They are places of unfulfilled longing, just as the people she paints are waiting and dreaming. They tell not only of life as it was, but of life as it should have been. Thus, melancholy and cheerfulness balance each other out, there are bohemian exaggerations, the lovingly embellished alternates with the relentlessly realistic view. She succeeded wonderfully in combining the light and the heavy in a matter-of-fact way.
