Erich Heckel

Among the artist friends of Bruecke, the young Erich Heckel was a dreamer, one who despaired of his time and reality, whose art gave expression to a deep longing for a balance between the individual and the world. This humanity also forms the continuum of the work phases of his almost 65 years of creative work, which range from rapturous radicalism to muted classicism. While the line increasingly receded over the years as the defining stabilising element of the picture and gave way to the harmonious combination of colour fields in the surface, Heckel developed a strong preference for landscape painting, whose motifs he collected from all parts of the world.
