On his 90th birthday

In the cabinet, we are exhibiting several works by the Dresden painter Egon Pukall, who died prematurely in 1989 and whose 90th birthday is being celebrated this year. Longing was a central theme in Egon Pukall's paintings. He dreamed of the Mediterranean, its light and its colours. Pukall's landscapes are metamorphoses of the near into the far. His numerous interior and window paintings are characterised by pure colour surfaces, quiet harmony and balance.

Egon Pukall

Egon Pukall's landscapes are metamorphoses of the near into the distant. They tell of a longing for the light and colors of the Mediterranean. His interior and window paintings, in contrast, are characterized by pure areas of colour, quiet harmony and balance. The window stands metaphorically for the boundary between inside and outside, between the reality of Dresden's Elbhang and a Mediterranean illusion.
